History

Since its inception in 1989 the CTHC has participated in the USA Team Handball U.S. Open National Championships in 1989 and 1991-2009. The club has traveled to international tournaments and has hosted the Carolina Blue Cup Tournament since 1990 and the Tar Heel Invitational since 2000 both in Chapel Hill, NC. Carolina Team Handball sponsors three competitive clubs. Carolina Team Handball (CTHC) is the University club and is made up of students attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Tar Heel Team Handball (TH THC) is the Carolina novice club, most Carolina THC players come through the TH THC. Carolina Blue is the Carolina alumni club team.

Following the Carolina Team Handball Club (men’s) creation, the Carolina Women’s Team Handball Club was founded late in the Fall of 2001.

The women’s club now hosts two annual tournaments, the Tar Heel Invitation in the fall and the Carolina Blue Cup in the spring. Carolina Women’s Team Handball sponsors three competitive clubs: Carolina is considered the A team while the Tar Heels and Rams are represented by developing players who will challenge for a spot on the Carolina team.

Competitive highlights over the last year for CWTHC include a 1st place finish at West Point’s fall invitational and a 3rd place finish at our Carolina Women’s Blue Cup tournament.

Furthermore, CWTHC brought home the Gold, for the second year in a row, from the 2010 Collegiate National Championships. The club also won the 2009 Collegiate National Championship.

CWTHC is a recognized UNC Sports Club. As a member of the Sports Club program, the CWTHC is a student-run organization that attempts to foster student development and leadership through sports. If you would like any more information about the club, please contact Liz Sims (easims@email.unc.edu)
